Abstract
The benefits and toxicity of any drug are a function of the drug's concentration in the patient. Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM), or drug concentration analysis, implies that a patient's drug concentration must fall within a certain range in order for the drug to be therapeutic. TDM requirements are described in a table. Researchers are looking at the relationship between antiretroviral drug concentrations and clinical outcome. There is no consensus regarding TDM use for antiretroviral drugs. An appendix includes text from the AIDS Clinical Trials Group Pharmacology Committee Position Paper on Therapeutic Drug Monitoring for Antiretroviral Drugs. The committee does not recommend using drug concentrations to change antiretroviral therapy in individual patients.
