Abstract

Purpose. To assess the visual outcome of pseudophakic versus phakic eyes undergoing vitrectomy for epiretinal membrane. Methods. Retrospective review of 52 consecutive eyes undergoing pars plana vitrectomy for epiretinal membrane by a single surgeon. Preoperative and postoperative LogMAR visual acuity scores were statistically compared. Results. There were 22 pseudophakic eyes and 30 phakic eyes preoperatively. Mean follow-up was 293 days. The mean preoperative LogMAR acuity score was 0.80 ( -20/125) and 0.65 ( -20/80-2) for pseudophakic and phakic eyes respectively. Final postoperative acuity score was 0.37 (-20/50-2) and 0.39 (-20/50-1) respectively. The absence of previtrectomy cystoid macular edema (CME) was associated with better visual outcome. In the 10 pseudophakic eyes without CME, the mean score improved from 0.83 (-20/125-1) to 0.24 (-20/32+2) whereas in the 12 pseudophakic eyes with CME before vitrectomy, the mean score improved from 0.77 (-20/125 + 1) to 0.48 (-20/63+1). This difference was statistically significant (p=0.047, students t test). There was no similar effect of CME observed in the phakic eyes (p=0.64) Conclusions. Visual outcome in pseudophakic eyes was better than that observed in phakic eyes. In our series, pseudophakic eyes without previtrectomy cystoid macular edema experienced the greatest visual improvement following vitrectomy for epiretinal membrane.
