Abstract
Whether it is the generation of a simple reflex behavior or an elaborate gymnastic routine, the vestibular system is an important sensory modality that is continually engaged as we go about our everyday activities. The vestibular sensors in our inner ears provide the brain with the head motion information necessary for gaze and postural stabilization as well as the computation of spatial orientation and self-motion. This article reviews the vestibular periphery and central pathways that give rise to reflex behaviors and self-motion perception, as well as the current understanding of adaptation and compensation that occurs within these pathways.
