Abstract
An algorithm for detection of ventricular fibrillation (VF) by automatic implantable defibrillator devices is described. The algorithm first generates a binary sequence by comparing the signal to a threshold. The distribution of the time intervals between the threshold crossings is observed to be Gaussian. Wald's sequential hypothesis technique is used to discriminate the mean threshold crossing intervals for VF signals. The sequential algorithm is suitable for implementation in a real-time system, and can be programmed to detect VF with a specified level of accuracy.
