Abstract

Replantation of amputated upper extremities is usually successful if the amputated limb is rapidly cooled between plastic bags filled with ice. Direct contact between the limb and the ice should not be allowed. Bleeding can usually be controlled with a simple compression dressing. The successful microsurgical revascularization and replantation of an amputated extremity begins with proper treatment and prompt cooling of the extremity prior to transferring the patient to the Curtis Hand Center.
