Abstract
The blood-brain barrier is an inductive product of interactions between endothelial cells and astrocytes that are established early in fetal life. Changes in the functional properties of brain endothelial cells occur throughout early childhood and may, in part, underlie the different vulnerability of adult and infant brain. We believe that a better understanding of the metabolic mechanisms underlying injury to the endothelial cell-astrocyte complex should provide a basis for new therapies to prevent brain injury in the young.
