Abstract
This three-part chapter discusses the importance of animal-assisted intervention (AAI) health benefits for marginalized groups and understanding culture, race, ethnicity, and identity in the design, implementation, and assessment of ethically conducted AAIs. The first two parts of this chapter examine the history, context, and implementation strategies within two examples of inclusive AAI practice (LGBTQ+ individuals and Black youth), and the third part discusses examples of how to create culturally safe AAI practice using case examples. Overall, this chapter aims to provide guiding principles for how to conceptualize and implement AAI in an inclusive way, recognizing the importance of identity in shaping AAI practice.
