Abstract
Two homeless alcoholic patients had Streptococcus pneumoniae successive infections. The first one was admitted to our hospital in May 1988 for a pneumonia caused by a type 1 S. pneumoniae, and in June 1988 for a second pneumonia caused by a type 5 S. pneumoniae. The other patient had a likely pneumococcal pneumonia in May 1988, and a pneumococcal meningitis with pneumonia caused by a type 1 S. pneumoniae in August 1988. The usual pneumococcal infection prophylaxis for patients with predisposing conditions is the vaccination or a long-term antibiotherapy. But this is difficult to lead with this special group of risk patients. Their acute lower respiratory tract infections have to be treated with penicillin in first instance, after the obtention of blood and sputum for culture.
