Trends in medication use: Implications for medication errors

Abstract

Patient safety, improved patient outcomes, drug efficacy, system efficiency, costs, profits, convenience and other factors are among the driving forces behind the constant change in medication use. This paper gives an overview of selected elements of the medication use system, describes recent changes and trends in the system, and provides some thoughts about the impact of some of the elements on medication errors.
