Abstract
Older adults have been shown in both private and public mental health care systems to utilize mental health services at low rates. To promote mental health care access, utilization, and quality, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has been working to expand and innovate mental health services for older Veterans, as part of a major effort to transform the VA mental health care delivery system. This transformation process places important emphasis on promoting integrated, interdisciplinary, evidence-based, and recovery-oriented mental health services. Through the development of new paradigms for integrating mental health care in non-mental health settings, VA has expanded the boundaries and reach of mental health services. These transformation efforts have had positive impact on older, as well as younger, Veterans and may serve as a model for other delivery systems.
