Abstract

The measured flux of sucrose across Cuprophan dialysis membrane in the presence of a concentration gradient is significantly greater than the flux predicted from radioactive tracer permeabilities measured in the absence of a concentration gradient. The difference can be explained if the membrane is heteroporous. Similar results are expected for other heterogeneous biological or artificial membranes.
