Abstract
We review the state-of-the-art concerning smoking from a cardiological point of view. This paper discuss the epidemiological significance and the relationship of smoking to cardiovascular disease, and it reviews the mechanism of the effects of tobacco and his additives on the cardiovascular system, without leaving behind such an importants items as are smoking the effect of smoking on women. At the end, we touch the treatment of smoking, remarking the importance of a regular psysician's counselling, so that se can achieve a significant number of patients stop smoking, and the way of timely starting a pharmacological approach. Finally, we conclude with the message that we confront to an interesting challenge, in which we can reach good results at a medium-term, concerning public health, provided that health proffesionals and public administrations do involve without any reservations.
