Abstract

Several observations suggest a relationship between thyroid hormone and the endogenous opiates, enkephalins and endorphin. Morphine (Shahid-Salles and Donovan 1977) and leucine-enkephalin (May, Mittler, Manougian and Ertel 1979) blunt TSH response to TRH in vivo. TRH overcomes the CNS depressant effects of beta-endorphin (Collu, Tache and Lis 1977). In addition, thyroid hormone can modify CNS levels of beta-endorphin (Panerai, Lee and Bellabarba 1979). Since CNS beta-endorphin and ACTH are derived from a common precursor (Mains, Eipper and Ling 1977), we studied the role of thyroid hormone in the regulation of both of these peptides.
