Abstract

Clinical testing of the human vestibular system commonly uses irrigations of each external ear canal with cold and, later, hot water to develop thermal gradients across the semicircular canals. In this paper an improved test procedure is described and analyzed. Clinical tests of the new procedure on 30 subjects have shown that the heat conduction model and analysis used in timing its sequence of thermal pulses was accurate.
