Abstract

Several years’ observation of both general medical wards and a stroke unit suggests that the stroke unit is far better suited to care for both the psychological and physical needs of the cerebrovascular-accident victim. The staff's team organization and its expectations from patients may be the chief factors in the stroke unit's success. Psychological effects of each unit on the patient, and their impact on recovery, are explored.
