Abstract

Operative laparoscopy in its sophisticated form involves the use of many special techniques and instruments. Lasers provide a safe form of energy for cutting, vaporizing, coagulating, and excising tissue because the tissue damage produced by a specific laser wavelength is completely predictable. Unlike electricity where the path of least resistance to the flow of electrons may not be readily identified, the knowledgeable surgeon is able to direct laser energy in a highly accurate manner and recognize its predictable thermal damage.
