Abstract

To the Editor: Phair and colleagues (Jan. 18 issue)¹ are to be complimented on their presentation of rates and markers of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study of homosexual men with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infections. We, too, noted that P. carinii pneumonia was strongly related to very low CD4+ cell counts, the presence of fever, and the presence of weight loss.² In the three years since the publication of our study, zidovudine has become available.
