To the Editor: Phair and colleagues (Jan. 18 issue)1 are to be complimented on their presentation of rates and markers of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study of homosexual men with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infections. We, too, noted that P. carinii pneumonia was strongly related to very low CD4+ cell counts, the presence of fever, and the presence of weight loss.2 In the three years since the publication of our study, zidovudine has become available.
