The restless tide: the HIV pandemic.

The second decade of the AIDS epidemic shows that the disease has proliferated at shocking speed, with an estimated 47 million people now infected. In spite of news that HIV medications have reduced the spread of infection in developed countries, the dramatic increases in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa show how dangerous the disease remains. Statistics indicate that 95 percent of all AIDS deaths have occurred in the developing world, where an equal percentage with HIV now live. About 16,000 new infections occur daily worldwide, with 10 percent of them occurring in children under age 15.
