Ed. Note: The following are representative examples of the very large number of letters received in response to the Special Article published in the October 23 issue. I have decided not to respond to these letters here but to allow them to stand on their own merits. I am grateful to all those who expressed their interest in the issues raised here. After carefully considering all these opinions, I am more convinced than ever that the proprietary health-care industry needs intensive study and ultimately will require public regulation, and that physicians should dissociate themselves from any financial interest in profit-making. . .
