Abstract

Various types of polyanions were tested for their effects on nuclear swelling using a new spectrophotometric technique. Heparin, dextran sulfate and polyaspartic acids (20 000-35 000 mol. wt.) caused nuclear swelling whereas polygalacturonic acid, chondroitin sulfate, hyaluronic acid, aspartic acid and polyaspartic acid (5600 mol. wt.) showed no swelling activity. The specificity of the polyanions for nuclear swelling was correlated with their effects on the template activity of nuclear DNA and chromatin during DNA synthesis.
