Twenty patients with irritable bowel syndrome underwent six weeks of group therapy incorporating behavioral and didactic techniques. Psychometric follow-up study revealed a significant reduction in dysphoric emotions despite the persistence of somatic complaints. These findings are evaluated in the context of the subjects’ cognitive styles of locus of control and field-dependence.
