Abstract

An important cause of irreversible blindness worldwide, glaucoma is the third leading cause of visual impairment and blindness in the United States after cataract and macular degeneration of aging. In 1988, approximately 2.64 million Americans suffered from glaucoma; 2.1 million were self-reporters. Direct medical costs of glaucoma were $1.9 billion, with $600.2 million spent on indirect costs. The total economic burden of glaucoma was $2.5 billion.
