The Clinical Spectrum of Fibroid Disease

Uterine fibroids are a prevalent disease with many associated symptoms. These symptoms can cause significant depreciation in the affected patient's quality of life. Recent epidemiological studies have identified multiple risk factors associated with fibroids, including increased prevalence in African-Americans over other racial and ethnic groups. Advancements in fibroid imaging have allowed acute diagnosis, characterization, and mapping of fibroids. Magnetic resonance imaging fibroid growth studies have yielded an intimate knowledge of the dynamic changes experienced by individual fibroids. With known risk factors, improved imaging capabilities, and a deeper understanding of fibroid growth, physicians are now better equipped to counsel and manage patients affected by uterine fibroids. Ultimately, a better understanding of the clinical spectrum of the disease will result in a better strategy of management and cure.
