Vastly improved knowledge of the role of IgE in mediating immediate hypersensitivity reactions has provided a scientific underpinning for traditional approaches to allergies like ragweed hay fever and helped explain the effectiveness of long utilized drugs. It has already led to improvements in diagnostic techniques and is opening the way to the development of better and more specific therapy.
