note = "Funding Information: diabetic adolescents. In a test of maximal work of short duration there was an appreciable drop in the arterial F.F.A. level during work, and a rapid post-exercise rise which did not exceed the initial resting level. The F.F.A. changes during work were similar in the diabetic and non-diabetic subjects, indicat- ing the same amount of F.F.A. utilisation in both groups, but the post-exercise rise was somewhat greater in the diabetics. Changes in serum-lipids or blood-sugar during the test were either slight or absent. During periods of increased physical activity ranging from 1 week to 5 months the serum-lipid levels tended to fall. After the end of the active periods, however, a more conspicuous yet transient lipid rise was observed. These changes also were similar in diabetic and non-diabetic subjects. In a study of vigorous exercise lasting 3-4 hours and performed on 3 consecutive days a moderate drop was observed in serum-lipids during work in both diabetics and controls. The venous F.F.A. level rose in all the non- diabetics, while in the diabetics it was variable for the first 2 days and rose only on the{\textquoteright}last day of exercise. The blood-sugar values in this study were unchanged in the non-diabetics, but fell considerably in the diabetics. The excretion of catechol amines increased during work to the same extent in the two groups. On the basis of a postulated causal relationship between hyperlipacmia and vascular disease, the investigation sup- ports the belief that regular physical activity might be of prophylactic value against angiopathy in diabetic as well as in non-diabetic subjects. For invaluable collaboration throughout this investigation we are greatly indebted to Miss Agneta Buren, Dr. Ulla von Euler, Mrs. Margareta Helander, Mrs. Ulla Klingwall, Mrs. Rosa Koff, Miss Vivi Lepviikman, Mr. Folke Mossfelt, Mrs. Brigitte Paulson, Mrs. Kerstin Severin, Mr. Hans Thorson, Mrs. Berit Tutturen, and Mrs, Kerstin Wallin. The determinations of urinary catechol amines were made at the department of endocrinology, Karolinska Sjukhuset, under the super- vision of Dr. Bernt Hokfelt, whose valuable assistance is gratefully acknowledged. The investigation was made possible by generous grants from Folksam, the Swedish Diabetic Association, and Svenska Margarin-industrins Forening for Naringsfysiologisk Forskning.",
