Abstract

Considerable progress in the technique and hardware involved in permanent pacemaker implantation has occurred over the past several decades. This chapter reviews the basic elements of permanent pacemaker implantation, including indications, patient preparation, venous access technique, lead selection, and implantation process. Potential complications of pacemaker therapy and their avoidance are highlighted. The latter part of the chapter reviews pacemaker system removal, with particular attention to patient selection and reference to updated Heart Rhythm Society guidelines, and the variety of techniques for lead extraction.
