Abstract

Today, it is extremely rare for an adult patient to present with a patent arterial duct (PAD). Moreover, when such a patient is identified, the preferred and initial treatment involves transcatheter device closure. Surgical options are reserved for complications of endocarditis (see Chap. 16), aneurysm formation, and failure of device closure. The surgeon, therefore, may be called on to treat PAD in the adult as the only lesion or in association with other congenital heart defects.
