N1 - Funding Information: This workshop was held on 11-12 September 1989 in Rockville, Maryland, and was sponsored by the Division of AIDS and the Division of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, NIAID, NIH. Invitees from the scientific community were charged with the mission ofidentifying and recommending priorities for research efforts that would result in improvements in the chemotherapeutics available for treatment of several important opportunistic infections associated with AIDS: Pneumocystis pneumonia, toxoplasmosis, fungal infections, enteric parasitic infections, Mycobacterium avium complex, and cytomegalovirus infections. This is a report of the recommendations of six working groups who examined the following questions: Is there a need for additional drugs? What basic biology issues need to be explored for each pathogen? What scientific strategy is crucial to new drug discovery? What recommendations, in priority order, would each working group suggest for future research directions?
