Abstract

Alcohol and other drug use in the general adolescent population has been well documented, but such use in the pregnant adolescent has not been defined clearly. Current studies suggest significant substance use in pregnant adolescents that may be different than that of older women. Additional research is needed in regard to prevalence of substance use among pregnant adolescents, methods to improve screening, and early intervention and the long-term effects of substance use.
