There is significant controversy regarding whether subclinical disorders of the thyroid are a normal variant of the aging process, represent a disease state, and warrant treatment. In this CME article, Dr. Miller addresses the clinical consequences of subclinical hypothyroidism and subclinical hyperthyroidism, the effect of treatment, and areas of controversy, and offers recommendations for managing these disorders.
