STATISTICAL MODELS RELATING THE ACTIVE CONTRACTILE FORCE OF SINGLE HEART CELLS TO FORCE IN STRIPS OF FROG HEART MUSCLE.

Research output: Contribution to journalConference articlepeer-review

Abstract

In this report the active contractile force generated by the single cell is presented and compared to the intact (multicellular) muscle strip. Fluctuations in force amplitude can be observed in the single cell but are greatly attenuated in the muscle strip. Two simple statistical models based on the parallel and series arrangement of the heart cells are proposed to account for this experimental observation, and the predictions of the models compare favorably to the experimental results.
