Abstract

Atherosclerosis is a chronic, systemic, inflammatory disease of the medium and large arteries such as the coronary, carotid and peripheral arteries, and the aorta. It is currently considered a major contributor to the development of cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death in the United States1 and worldwide.2
