In 2016, there were 13.7 million new strokes globally, and stroke was the second leading cause of death (5.5 million) and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs; 116.4 million) worldwide.1 However, strides in both stroke prevention and treatment have been made. From 1990 to 2016, age-standardized global stroke incidence decreased by 8.1%, stroke deaths by 36.2%, and DALYs by 34.2%.1
