Soundwaves in the Universe

Observations of large scale structure indicate the presence of very large, wall-like superclusters. In their distributions there is a growing evidence, that there is a characteristic scale in excess of 100 h-1 Mpc. Other observations seem to imply only Gaussian fluctuations in the power spectrum. We describe how this apparent conflict can be caused by differences in sampling strategy. If the baryon fraction of the background density is high, close to the upper limits from the D abundance, the characteristic scale can possibly be interpreted as a remnant of the acoustic oscillations at recombination. Such a model would have very specific predictions for the position and amplitude of the Doppler peaks in the cosmic microwave background.
