Social learning disabilities

Children with learning disabilities suffer from social as well as academic problems. There is a question whether the socially deficient, learning disabled (LD) child has a deficit of basic psychological processing or expressive deficits as contrasted with the more traditionally regarded causes of social-emotional disturbances such as dysfunctional family or secondary effect of school failure. LD children with right hemisphere dysfunction, as evidenced by neurological and neuropsychological examination, have more social-emotional problems than LD children with left hemisphere dysfunction. However, one of the major confounds possibly contributing to these social inadequacies is the difficulty 'right hemispheric children' have in attending to nonverbal cues. Presently circumstantial evidence suggests that for an LD child social failure is right hemisphere based.
