Abstract

The hypothesis that components of the silicone breast implant potentiate antibody response is tested. The ability of silicone oil, silicone gel, and octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane [D4] to potentiate antibody production against a conventional test antigen bovine serum albumin (BSA) in mice is evaluated to determine the adjuvant effect of silicone products. Seventy A/J mice are used and tissue samples are analyzed by light microscopy and analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results showed that viscous silicone products potentiate antibody response. These silicone products can also exert a synergistic effect with other adjuvants.
