Abstract

The complexity of addiction to nicotine has led to consideration of drugs other than nicotine replacement medications that may be useful for one or more of the hurdles smokers face \vhen quitting. Some may lessen a withdrawal symptom, such as depressed mood, in patients who are struggling with this problem; others may substitute for the pleasure some patients derive from the slight burning sensation in the mouth while smoking. Only one non-nicotine medication has been approved by the PDA for smoking cessation - sustained-release bupropion. Large-scale studies of the other drugs are generally lacking, but some antidepressants, anxiolytics, nicotine antagonists, sensory-stimulating compounds, and other drugs may improve long-term quit rates in selected patients.
