N2 - The flaA (cheC) locus from Escherichia coli is important in controlling the rotational direction of flagella during chemotaxis. The locus was sequenced, and a site of transcriptional initiation was determined. Two reading frames, flaAI and flaAII, span the locus. flaAII corresponds to certain flaA and cheC mutations, and has some unusual features in the predicted secondary structure. flaAI, however, has not been identified previously, but a flaAI deletion, which produced a truncated FlaAI peptide in minicells, clearly identified the FlaAI protein.
