Abstract
Flexible bronchoscopy has become an useful diagnostic and therapeutic procedure in pediatric age during spontaneous breathing, requiring only light analgesia and mild sedation. Objectives: Evaluation of efficiency, safety and efficacy of I.V. Propofol administration as sedative agent in a population of pediatric patients. Methods: We selected in this study a population of pediatric patients, including children under 3 years of age, undergoing flexible bronchoscopy during spontaneous breathing. Results: Bronchoscopy was completed successfully reaching an adequate sedation level with a mean induction dose of 1.2 mg/kg of Propofol. Decreases of blood pressure were well controlled with I.V. fluid infusions. One case of hypertension pneumothorax was registered. Conclusions: Propofol may be an effective drug for sedation in pediatric patients undergoing flexible bronchoscopy procedure. It is considered safe only in a monitored environment.
