Abstract

This chapter discusses a perceptual phenomenon in which visual stimuli seem to assume the color and brightness of the surrounding region and thereby vanish from perception. It begins by reviewing the basic findings and theories in order to clarify the origin of the ideas that guided recent neurophysiological studies. It then reviews those recent studies that tried to solve the puzzle of filling-in by means of single-cell recording in monkeys.
