Abstract
Endoscopes are complex and fragile pieces of equipment, and because of their repeated use on different patients they may transmit infection. The care and maintenance of endoscopes are therefore of prime importance to any endoscopy unit and require a clear understanding of the principles of disinfection. The aim of this review is to summarize the risk of disease transmission during colonoscopy and to review the recommended procedures for cleaning and disinfecting colonoscopes. When followed, these guidelines make performing colonoscopy and associated procedures safe for patients while remaining efficient and cost-effective for the health care provider.
