Abstract

A study was conducted to develop a minimally invasive method to implant polymers using photopolymerization and analyze gene expression. Photopolymerization was applied to cartilage tissue engineering using a model hydrogel system of poly(ethylene oxide)-dimethacrylate and poly(ethylene glycol). Chondrocytes were photoencapsulated in vitro and in nude mice using transdermal photopolymerization. In vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrated chondrocyte survival and extracellular matrix production through biochemical and mechanical evaluation. Growth factors added to the hydrogel significantly increased proteoglycan concentration and cell number.
