Abstract
The process of villous development is influenced by several cytokines present in the circulation, interstitial milieu, and in ingested amniotic fluid and milk. This article categorizes the effects of various cytokines according to the characteristics of their cognate receptors. Preliminary patterns can be identified in these receptor-based groupings, even from compilation of data from disparate studies that have used a variety of experimental models. This area of study has important implications in terms of potential therapies tailored to specific types of intestinal stress in preterm and sick neonates.
