N2 - The various forms of renal artery stenosis are reviewed. The two forms of stenosis seen most frequently are arteriosclerosis and fibromuscular dysplasia. In a series of 160 patients these forms accounted for 70% and 22.5% respectively, of all cases of stenosis. Fibromuscular dysplasia is divided into four main types, of which medial fibroplasia accounts for 65-75%, perimedial fibroplasia for 10-15%, intimal fibroplasia for about 10%, and medial hyperplasia for about 5%. A number of rare causes of renal artery stenosis are also discussed. For the most important forms the histological picture, radiographic appearance, clinical findings and natural course or progression of the lesion are described and discussed on the basis of the literature and personal observations. Specific recommendations for the treatment of each of the forms of stenosis are given with reference to the natural course and the results of surgical and/or conservative treatment.
