Abstract

The kidneys are vital organs for optimal body homeostasis. They are responsible for fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balance. They are highly vascular structures. Acute insults result in acute kidney injury (AKI), and chronic damage to the kidney results in chronic kidney disease (CKD) progressing to end-stage renal disease and the need for renal replacement therapy. This article summarizes the methods to estimate glomerular filtration rate, staging systems for AKI and CKD, nutritional assessment and requirements in patients with AKI and CKD, and the association between obesity, diet, and kidney diseases.
