The authors wish to thank Drs J. J. White and D. H. Lockwood for allowing us to study their patients. We are also indebted to the nursing staff and head dietician, Mrs Chandler, on Osier 5 for their help in doing calorie counts and caring for these patients. Mrs J. Gordon helped greatly with the data collection and Miss C. Middleton provided invaluable secretarial assistance. This study was partially supported by NIMH Grant 5-T01-MH-14325-02 and NIH Grant RO1-AM-193O2.

N2 - Food intake, appetite and a variety of feelings were measured pre-and post-operatively in obese patients undergoing jejuno-ileal bypass surgery. Decreased food intake correlated closely with the amount of weight loss at both 4 and 30 months after surgery. Malabsorption correlated with weight loss at 4 months but not 30 months post-operatively. The cause of the decreased food intake is unknown and cannot be completely explained by either depression, nausea, malabsorption, liver disease, an attempt to avert diarrhoea, or decreased appetite.
