Abstract

Recurrence of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonitis occurred in 2 children with acute lymphocytic leukemia approximately 7 months after recovery from the initial infections which had been treated with pentamidine isethionate. Both patients appeared free of pulmonary disease between the episodes of P. carinii pneumonitis. Serum immunoglobulin values were not significantly altered and both patients were in hematologic remission of leukemia. Reinfection or relapse of P. carinii pneumonitis has not been previously reported in children or adults following apparent recovery.
