Abstract

The real-time networking of integrated patient care workstations at the Thorax center, Erasmus University, the Netherlands, is described. New-generation cost-effective personal computers with high processing power and large storage capacity meet the complex requirements of monitoring and analysis of vital signs integrated with information storage and retrieval. The workstations are based on an IBM-PS/2 Model 80 System (with an Intel 80386 32 bit processor) with an 80387 math coprocessor, an 8514 high resolution (1024 × 768) color (256) graphic display and token-ring network connectivity with gateways to the central hospital information computer network as well as to the clinical laboratory.
