Abstract
The reaction of hemoglobin with nitric oxide has been investigated by recording absorbtion spectra of human hemoglobin in time, in the presence of different ligands. The results are summarized in the figure. They suggest that the combination of the various derivatives of hemoglobin with NO would converge to the formation of methemoglobin [Hb(III)], establishing a redox cycle which depletes the nitric oxide being produced.
