Abstract
Barrett's esophagus (BE) is a premalignant condition with a small but real risk of progression to esophageal adenocarcinoma. Development of cancer is thought to arise as the final step in the metaplasia-dysplasia-carcinoma sequence. Therefore, recent efforts have focused on endoscopic therapies that intervene early, with the goal of arresting progression of intestinal metaplasia to dysplasia, and eventually, to carcinoma. To this end, several ablative techniques have been applied. This article summarizes recent data regarding the efficacy and safety of radiofrequency ablation in the treatment of BE. The indications, technical aspects, and cost-effectiveness are also reviewed.
